WASHINGTON, Mich. (November 4, 2023) –
WHAT: Michigan Stars FC midfielder Hunter Olson scored what proved to be the match
winner in the 60 th minute against ALBION San Diego in his club’s 3-2 semi-final win
here in the National Independent Soccer Association playoffs. The club now waits to
see if it hosts its title defense against Flower City Union next Saturday or if it will
head to League Cup winner Chattanooga FC for a Sunday, Nov. 12, match.
In a re-match of the 2022 championship, Olson’s tally gave the breathing room
needed after Michigan gained a 2-1 advantage on defender Anthony Bowie’s header
at the 27-minute mark. That score came while Romeo Stadium was still buzzing from
a 23 rd minute finish by MSFC MF Andres Chalbaud on a goal-keeping miscue by
Roach.
In fact, keepers played big roles early for all the wrong reasons. Roach’s mistake
came eight minutes after MSFC GK Tatenda Mkuruva seemingly thought he
punched a cross over the bar, but it fell to ALBION MF Alexander Dalou for a wide-
open header to open the scoring. Forward Shinya Kadono came off the bench in the
71 st minute and made the game close with a goal in the 82 nd .
MSFC earned a bye for the quarterfinals as the no. 2 seed. ALBION topped
Maryland Bobcats FC in the quarters on penalties 0-0 (8-7).
