Gabriel Silva comes to Stumptown Athletic with high-level experience in his home country of Brazil, as well as college and club play in the United States. He played two seasons at Mt. San Antonio College in California, leading the team to win the CCCAA State Championship and picking up All-South Coast Conference honors both years. He was a starter at California Baptist University, earning All-PacWest second-team honors and Academic All-PacWest honors. Silva also played for FC Golden State Force, the 2019 USL2 Western Conference Champions. Silva is married; he and his wife Kassy have two dogs.

When did you start playing soccer?

My father always watched soccer on TV, and I just fell in love with it. I started playing indoor soccer when I was around six, then decided to try outdoor when I was 10. It took a good four months before I really did well, because of the size of the outdoor field, but then I got better. I played for my school team and the local club, similar to the YMCA programs, but incredibly competitive.

When did your soccer career take off?

We have a lot of professional clubs in Brazil, and they are always looking for good players. I started in the academies, then the pro clubs watched me play and picked me up when I was 15. I played for three clubs – Vitória, then Gama, then Ituama, then back to Gama for a few months before I moved to the U.S. to play with Olympica United. I was 17 and still in high school, so I did home school and finished in the U.S.

Olympica United brought me and a few other players in from Brazil, and we toured in Europe. I then played at Mt. San Antonio College in California, where we won the CCCAA State Championship, then I played for California Baptist University, where I earned my degree in exercise science. I was also playing for FC Golden State Force, the 2019 USL2 Western Conference Champions.

What made you sign with Stumptown Athletic?

I thought it would be a good project. The people running the team are very excited about it, and the coaching staff has a great reputation. Personally, I was looking for something new to start my professional career, where I can bring my experience and also learn more and grow as a player. My wife and I also thought it was good to have the opportunity to experience new things and live in a new city.

What should fans know about you?

I’m very excited to represent Matthews and this area. I’m very dedicated to what I do and I always try to give my best. I want to win – I hate losing. You can expect to see me giving everything I have in every game so we can win.

Off the field, I’m a very chill and relaxed person, and I’m very shy. Sometimes people mistake that for arrogance, but it’s not – I’m just realty shy! When I step on the field, I’m completely different. It’s almost like I have two personalities.
